Background Information

RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work is a collection of Little Steven’s albums, along with rarities and additional tracks. Two versions are available, a limited vinyl release, limited to 1000 copies worldwide, and a CD version of the release. U2 is involved in the release on a number of the discs. The set includes the Sun City album, which included Bono on the title track, “Sun City”, as well as various mixes of that song, as well as his original solo version of “Silver and Gold.” Adam Clayton worked with Little Steven on his 1999 album, Born Again Savage which is one of the discs included here. The vinyl box collection was the first time that the Born Again Savage album had been released on vinyl, prior only being available on CD.

The vinyl box set was announced in late 2019 and released on December 6, 2019. When announced no other formats of this box, or the individual releases was announced. This set includes seven 12-inch records on coloured vinyl, as well as four CDs. The coloured vinyl are in a splatter pattern, and are in a variety of colours. Each of the vinyl releases was packaged inside of their own individual artwork and then packaged inside the box. The four CDs containing bonus materials are placed into a 12-inch sized insert with liner notes.

At the time of the vinyl box set, each of these albums was made available in high resolution digital audio leading up to the box set release. In March of 2020, each of the albums was released by themselves in stores, both in black vinyl and coloured vinyl. In June / July of 2020, each of these titles was released as a standalone CD title as well. Finally, on June 30, 2020, it was announced there would also be a CD release of this box set, which was released July 31, 2020. The CD version of the box set contains all the individual titles in their commercial digipack packaging, as well as the four CD set of rarities included in the vinyl box. Also included are three DVDs featuring live material.

Is there new U2 material in the box set? No, all of these tracks have been released before, but they are now remastered on this release. None of the added bonus tracks include Bono or Adam Clayton, or any other member of U2.

Born Again Savage was released in high resolution digital formats on November 30, 2019, the standalone vinyl release was March 13, 2020, and the standalone CD release was June 5, 2020. Sun City was released in high resolution digital formats on December 6, 2019, the standalone vinyl release was March 13, 2020, and the standalone CD release was July 24, 2020.
