"All I Want is You" - U2

Promotional Release

Track Listing:

Background Information

“All I Want is You” was the final single released commercially for the promotion of “Rattle and Hum”. The single was released with little unique promotional material being so late in the album promotional cycle. A unique release, “U2 2 Date”, was also released at the same time on 12-inch vinyl. As that release has a unique title, and did not include “All I Want is You” it has its own discography entry.

In the US, even though there was not a commercial 5-inch CD release for “All I Want is You” there was a promotional release by Island. Unlike the previous two singles where the promo just contained one track, on the US release this time all four tracks from the commercial single released elsewhere are included, two versions of “All I Want is You”, “Everlasting Love” and “Unchained Melody”. The previous two promotional singles had been released with no inserts, but “All I Want is You” was released with a back insert featuring Bono looking to one side and the song credits. 5-inch CDs were also issued for promotional use in Japan, but here it was just the commercial CD with a red promotional sticker attached to the cover.

In some regions the promotional release was the same as the commercial release and contained “All I Want is You” and “Unchained Melody”. This was the case in Australia (sticker placed on commercial release ), France (promotional sticker on cover of the release), Germany (included a “Single Facts” one-page insert, as well as a different label on the vinyl), and the UK (large hole for the juke box promo, but is the commercial single otherwise). In the USA a white label 7-inch promotional record was released, but here the single contained “All I Want is You” on both sides.

In the USA a 12-inch promotional release was also done, with a white label vinyl in a generic sleeve. The vinyl contained the long version of “All I Want is You” on both sides.

In Australia Festival Records was tasked with producing a small number of copies of “All I Want is You” in 7-inch purple vinyl for a local radio contest. It was a legitimate short run done for the radio contest, said to be limited to only 100 copies. They had also produced a 7-inch red vinyl copy of “Desire” (1500 copies) and a 7-inch blue vinyl copy of “Angel of Harlem” (1500 copies). However, a number of “after hours” pressings done at the pressing plant resulted in additional coloured vinyl in very limited numbers. A 12-inch Australian pressing of “All I Want is You” in green vinyl does exist, and it is said that only three copies were made. In 2006 one of these pressings was listed in a list of the Top 60 U2 Collectibles in Record Collector Magazine as the #1 item. The fact that only three copies of this release are said to exist, and that they were likely done and never sold, has led to our inclusion of these items here.

In Brazil, a 12-inch pressing with “Everlasting Love” was released, but was backed by non-U2 tracks. Further information on these Brazil 12-inch pressings can be found in a separate discography entry. For more information on the single “All I Want is You”, including information about the song, how it charted, and the songs included on international releases, please see our discography entry for the “All I Want is You” single.
