The “Carved in Stone” series of albums is a collection of performances done at Denver Colorado’s Red Rocks Park and Ampitheatre. The CDs are compiled as a fund raiser for the “Rocks Fund”. All nets profits from the CDs go directly to the Preserve the Rocks Fund, a donation-driven reserve dedicated to the rehabilitation and preservation of the historic Red Rocks Ampitheatre.
Red Rocks of course, is the famous venue, where U2 performed and recorded the video “Under a Blood Red Sky”. The accompanying live CD that the band released was not recorded at Red Rocks and was made up of audio sourced from a number of venues during their 1983 tour. Only “Party Girl” and “Gloria” on that audio release were recorded at the Red Rocks performance on June 5, 1983. However the DVD featured the video of the full performance from that date. It was expected that this audio CD compiled of performances from Red Rocks would be the first audio release of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” from that concert. The liner notes of the CD even list that it had been recorded on that fateful night at Red Rocks. However, upon closer inspection, it is obvious that this is not the version recorded for the video. Instead it is the same audio performance that was recorded live in St. Goarhausen, Germany during another concert in 1983, and is the version of the song that had been released in audio on the “Under a Blood Red Sky” CD. Quite an oversite for a CD that claims to be made up of performances from Red Rocks.
The version here is slightly different than the version on the US CD. It fades into “Sunday Bloody Sunday” just like the US version of “Under a Blood Red Sky” does, however, the version here on “Carved in Stone Volume 2” also fades out which makes it a very slightly different edit than the version found there.
Sunday Bloody Sunday:
Recorded live on June 5, 1983. Written by Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen. Produced by Jimmy Iovine. (Editors Note: Please see notes section above, date is incorrect).
