Background Information

On August 31, 1997, Diana, The Princess of Wales had been killed in a horrible car crash. Long known for her charity work, she had often crossed paths with popular musicians at a variety of benefits and events. Indeed she had met with Bono during the 1995 Pavarotti and Friends concert in Modena, Italy where the song “Miss Sarajevo” was first performed live with Pavarotti. It was “Miss Saravejo” which was chosen to appear on this compilation. The “Single Version” of the track was used, and the compilation was issued on December 1, 1997 in the UK and the following day in North America.

The CD was put together for the “Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund” charity which had been created in Diana’s memory. The fund was co-founded by Diana’s lawyer, Anthony Julius, to deal with the donations that poured in from around the world in the days and months after her death. The proceeds from Elton Johns single “Candle in the Wind 1997” were also donated to this fund. The CD explains the fund: “The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was created in response to the huge expression of sadness from people all over the World following the Princess’ death. Her office at Kensington Palace was overwhelmed with letters from people wishing to give to charity in memory of the Princess, whose devotion to charitable and humanitarian causes was well known. The fund shall be helping many causes which the Princess held dear through the kindness and generosity of those who have given in her memory.”

Due to the short turn-around time between the death of Diana and the production of this CD, most of the tracks included are previously released songs, or previously recorded songs that the artists donated to the album. Only 13 tracks had previously been unreleased.
