"Unwelcome Jazz" (1995)
Demo Song
Background Information
Brian Eno published his diary from 1995, called A Year with Swollen Appendices. It was published as a book in 1996 by Faber and Faber in the UK. That was the year that Eno worked with U2 on Original Soundtracks 1, and the book makes mention of a number of demos and working titles throughout. “Unwelcome Jazz” is one of the songs included in the book.
Eno speaks about this song “So-called because on one else seems to like it much. Fast, angular, irrational melodies over strong, dense grooves.”
The song later becomes “Plot 180” and Eno refers back and forth to the track by both names, but it is connected through his discussion of possibly using a vocal by Haris Silajdzic on the track. In the end they choose not to.
