Background Information

Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen played on two tracks on Daniel Lanois’ 1989 album “Acadie”. The two tracks were “Jolie Louise” and “Still Water”. As part of the promotion of the album, the song “Still Water” was issued as a promotional single, on both 12-Inch vinyl and CD. Both were released in generic label covers. And both releases featured additional versions of “Still Water”.

There were three versions of “Still Water” on the release, including the album version taken from the “Acadie” album. There was also a “Radio Version” with very slight changes to the mix of the song, and a “Live Version” recorded live in Ottawa, ON. Larry and Adam are not present on the live version of the song, but are featured on the album version, as well as the radio version of the song.

Lanois discussed the recording of the song in the original liner notes of “Acadie”: “This song was written in New Orleans. Initial recording was done with myself and Malcolm Burn playing guitars. Tony Hall overdubbed a sketch bass and I did sketch drums. In England, Brian Eno recorded the haunting background vocals. Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton recorded their parts soon after that in Dublin. It was later finished and mixed in New Orleans. The final version is made up of four mixes done on four different dates and then edited together.”
