Background Information
This March 2020 EP of songs from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds featured three mixes of the song “Blue Moon Rising” and two additional songs. The song “Blue Moon Rising” featured a vocal appearance by Bono in the section that many critics said was reminiscent of Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill.” When released in March 2020 Bono’s participation in this record was not revealed, and it was only later that Noel revealed this information, when collecting the song with others for a compilation.
In the compilation Back The Way We Came liner notes, the credits for “Blue Moon Rising” list that all instruments are by Noel Gallagher, except drums by Jeremy Stacey, and backing vocals by PDH. (PDH = Paul David Hewson, aka Bono) Noel also writes in the liner notes for the album, “The bit in the solo section that has become known as ‘The Kate Bush Bit’ is actually the singer from U2 singing it down the phone in his kitchen!!” Bono’s vocals consist of a series of noises in the background of the song.
“Blue Moon Rising” was released in three vinyl formats; black vinyl, gold coloured vinyl, and a limited picture disc. Digital versions of the EP were also released including compressed versions, CD-quality versions, and high resolution versions of the EP. It has also been issued to streaming services.
Bono’s vocal part can be clearly heard on all three mixes of “Blue Moon Rising” on this release. A promotional video was released for the song, but the video does not feature Bono. The video was released on January 30, 2020, ahead of the release of the full EP. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds toured extensively with U2 in 2017 and again in 2019 on the anniversary tour for The Joshua Tree.
“Blue Moon Rising” was collected on the greatest hits album, Back the Way We Came: Vol. 1 and an extended three disc version of that album contains another mix of the song.
