Background Information

Each year, the Pearl Jam fan club, the Ten Club, releases a gift for the holidays. Typically these include exclusive tracks that cannot be found elsewhere, and many often feature guest performers, or tracks taken from special live performances. The format of these fan club exclusives is typically a 7-Inch vinyl single. In 2006, just weeks after Pearl Jam had opened for U2 at the closing night of the Vertigo tour in Honolulu Hawaii, the 2006 exclusive was released. On the a-side was a cover of a Who song “Love, Reign O’er Me”. On the b-side is a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World”.

The cover of “Rockin’ in the Free World” is credited to U-Jam. This was a performance by Pearl Jam where they were joined by Bono and the Edge (U-Jam being a combination of U2 and Pearl Jam). The performance was live, taken from a performance in Melbourne Australia at the Make Poverty History concert, on November 17, 2006. The version of the song here is edited, the initial performance was long and rambling. It was edited here to 5:27 in length. The actual performance was a few minutes longer.

A longer unedited version of the performance of “Rockin’ in the Free World” was released on a free DVD that was made available with the Herald Sun newspaper. The DVD was titled “Make Poverty History” and was given free with the paper.
