Background Information
Mike Peters, best known for his time as front man for The Alarm, has put together a three volume autobiography, with the first volume, Love being released on December 12, 2024. The remaining two volumes, Hope and Strength, will follow. The publisher of the book is A Way With Media, and they plan to publish one volume annually.
Two versions of the book were published. The red covered, “Superluxe” version of the book comes in a red clam shell cover, is numbered from 1 – 500, comes complete with a bookplate signed by the author, and includes a facsimile of one of Peter’s early journals, and comes with a red vinyl record and a compact disc. The grey covered, “Luxe” version of the book comes in a grey clam shell cover, is numbered from 501 to 1500, comes complete with the bookplate signed by the author and includes just the audio CD.
The audio on the CD and vinyl is Love: 1959 – 1991 Life Soundtrack and is described by the publisher as: “produced by Mike Peters documenting the timespan of the story featuring audio sound bites of significant and inspirational moments in time along with previously unreleased tracks and live / studio mixes of historical musical milestones from Mike Peters’ life journey from 1959 – 1991.”
The audio included covers Peter’s life which includes documenting several meetings with U2. Between 1981 and 1987, The Alarm would play with U2 on 33 different occasions, including an extended run of dates on the War tour. One song on the compilation, “The Stand” is made up of three pieces, “The Stand”, “Blaze of Glory” and “Sixty Eight Guns” on CD, and on vinyl is made up of “The Stand” and “Sixty Eight Guns”. During this song, Bono appears a number of times via interview footage and conversations from the stage captured live in concert. All of U2 appear on the CD at one point performing the start of “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall”, a cover of the Bob Dylan song, performed in Boulder, Colorado. But only about 12 seconds of the audio is included before it cuts away to other things. The songs are mixed with a number of sound bites and conversations, mixed with live and previously unheard mixes of songs by The Alarm.
The three dates that U2 / Bono are included from are:
- 1983-03-29 Hammersmith Palais, London
- 1983-06-06 University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
- 1983-06-12 Dallas, TX (Interview with George Gimark, KRQX)
“The Stand” includes audio from Bono at the Hammersmith Odeon, March 29, 1983, speaking from the stage and calling Peters to the stage to join them. It also includes brief audio of U2 and The Alarm doing “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” at Boulder, CO, June 6, 1983. (About 14 seconds in total of the actual song, and the introduction to the song.) “Blaze of Glory” includes interview clips from a Bono and Mike Peters interview with George Gimarc in Dallas Texas, June 12, 1983 (Rock and Roll Alternative program, KRQX). The final segment of the song, “Sixty Eight Guns” does not include any U2 content. The three segments together make up a 13:19 track titled, “The Stand”. On vinyl, “The Stand” is edited down and does not include “Blaze of Glory”. For those interested in additional information about the contents, please click on the song title above.
500 copies of the record were pressed on red vinyl. 1500 copies of the CD were made. The recordings were released on The Twenty First Century Recording Company, a label that Peters had set up many years ago. The recording on CD runs 78:54, while on vinyl, it runs about 18 minutes shorter at 50:42. The music was produced by Mike Peters, and mastered by George Williams.
