Background Information

The song “Rise Above 1” was the lead single from the musical soundtrack “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”. The song is featured in the musical, however, this version of the song was recorded in studio and features Bono and The Edge on vocals along side the musical performer, Reeve Carney. The song was revealed on May 25, 2011 on American Idol with Bono, The Edge, and Carney present to perform the song. The song was made available for sale at 8pm EST that same day as a digital track on iTunes and Amazon. Promotional copies are pressed on CDR and were rapidly sent to radio, in an empty jewel case, with no inserts. This version of the track was produced by Alex Da Kid, and differs from the version used in the soundtrack, which is released as “Rise Above 2”, and produced by Steve Lillywhite, on the full soundtrack album released on June 14, 2011. The song here is the same version that is found on the soundtrack album, and was the same version that was digitally released.

Alex Da Kid is an English producer, who has worked heavily with acts such as Skyler Grey, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Alex Da Kid was working in studio with Mark Foster, of Foster the People when the track came in to be polished up. Mark Foster came up with the keyboards during the verses, and performed on the track. Additional bass and guitar was also recorded and mixed into the track by Da Kid.

Initially just a digital single and the promotional CD were issued. However, in the next week a commercial CD would be made available for sale at performances of the musical as well as through the merchandise website for the musical. This commercial CD was released with little noise, and most people had not even realized one had been released.
