Background Information

The Soweto Gospel Choir, is a choir from South Africa formed in Soweto by two choir directors, David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer. The 30-plus member choir blends popular music with traditional African gospel elements. The group performed at the Johannesburg 46664 concert for Nelson Mandela in 2003. They have released a number of tracks which feature them singing as a choir over top of previously released U2 tracks. The first instance of this was in 2007 when they sang over the live performance of “One” that Bono and The Edge had performed at the 46664 concert in 2003. The choir was not originally part of that performance, but their vocals were added in later. Following that, for the 2010 World Cup, a number of commercials were developed using U2 songs with the choir singing over top. Many of these performances came from the recently released Rose bowl video. U2 did release some of these songs themselves, and “Amazing Grace” and “Where the Streets Have No Name” were released as part of the “Duals” fan club album.

This release features a new mash up of the two acts. It takes the Declan Gaffney / Matt Paul mixed version of “Get On Your Boots” for the base of the track. This mix of the song was never commercially available, except on a limited release of “Artificial Horizon” on vinyl. Other than that, it was only released on the fan club CD of the same name. This represents the first wide commercial release of this song. The song is edited to include choir vocals over top of the original mix. Although named only “Fish Out of Water Remix” on the back of the CD, we’ve chosen to add a “Gospel Version” to keep the two mixes straight. The original “Fish Out of Water Remix” has no vocals from the gospel choir.
