Background Information

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the album, and the big remastered box set released in 2020, U2 did release a couple of earlier remasters of the album. The first remaster was done by The Edge, with engineering by Scott Sedillo and additional work by Declan Gaffney. The initial remastering was done in 2017, and it was release first as part of Apple’s Mastered for iTunes program (MFiT). All of U2’s albums were released under this program on the same day in May 2017. At the time, the remastered version of All That You Can’t Leave Behind was only available via Apple. The digital download came with a newly created digital booklet available in a pdf format with the purchase of the album. Pop and Rattle and Hum were also remastered at the same time.

The 2017 remaster includes “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” which had appeared as a bonus track on previous releases of the album in some regions.

In April 2018, the first physical release of this new remaster was issued. All That You Can’t Leave Behind was released on 180 gsm vinyl, worldwide. The album used the 2017 remaster, however, “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” was not included as part of the release. The copyright on the vinyl confirms that the 2017 remaster was used. Also released on the same day were a new remaster of Pop, and the 2009 remaster of “Wide Awake in America”. The vinyl in 2018 was a pressing in Germany, which was sold worldwide. The pressings in each country are the same, however US copies are stickered “Made in Germany” on the outer stretch wrap.

Although the 2017 digital version still contains the dedication to Aung San Suu Kyi on the liner notes for “Walk On”, this is removed on the 2018 vinyl release, and it is now dedicated to no one.

This set was only available in digital format from iTunes, and as a vinyl pressing with accompanying download card. It was not released on CD at this time. A 2019 release on CD in Japan to celebrate U2 touring there returned to an earlier mastering of the album, and did not use the new remaster. In 2020 the album would be further tweaked for a box set release, including standalone vinyl and CD pressings to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the album.
