Background Information
“Atomic City” is a single released by U2 in September 2023, as they kick off their shows at Sphere in Las Vegas. For more information on the song and the commercial single, please see our main discography entry.
The song was also issued for promotion, with a release on September 29, 2023 in digital formats to radio, and other media. The promotional single was released as a digital release, and at this point we are unaware of any physical release of the song for promotion. If such a release does happen we will update our information below. The promotional track was sent via Universal Music at 12 midnight, which corresponded to the release of the video for the song as well. Digital promotion included the song in either a wave format, or compressed format, digital information about the single itself, and the cover art of the single. Some promotional delivery services were given a second image of the band as well, photographed by Sam Jones in Las Vegas. It was the same version released commercially that was sent out for promotion on this original release.
On October 6, 2023, two further versions of the song were also released digitally to radio together. The “Alternative Edit” is a slightly longer version of the song, with a repeat of the instrumental of the song at the end of the track, instead of the song fading out as it does on the commercial release. A second, much shorter version, the “Edit” chops out a number of verses and one repeat of the chorus to bring the song in at just over two minutes. It too has the ending of the song found in the Alternative Edit. Also on October 6, 2023, a further version of the song was sent to radio by itself. This one is much closer to the commercially released version, but does remove the silence at the start, as well as fading out quicker, and about one second earlier.
On February 9, 2024, two remixes by David Guetta were sent out for promotion to radio. These were released digitally only, and no promotional CD was released. Earlier in the week, both mixes were released commercially following U2’s appearance on the Grammy Awards. (These mixes were also sent out to promotion again on February 23, with the Extended Mix being sent to Mainstream Club stations, and the regular remix being sent to Rhythm Radio.)
On April 25, 2024, a three track promo included the Extended remix by David Guetta, as well as two edits, the “Intro Edit” (02:54) and the “Short Edit” (01:56).
On June 21, the remix by Tiësto was sent out for promotion as well. The same version as the commercial single was used. On July 16, the alternate radio edit was sent out to radio. On July 19, the Tiësto was sent out again to radio, this time it was a two track single, including the original mix as well as what we call the radio edit, which is different than the version sent out a few days earlier. On July 23, a two track promotional single was sent out, this time with the radio edit and a short edit of the Tiësto mix. These were all delivered using digital promotional systems and promotional CDs were not produced.
