Background Information

This promotional release was only identified as “Cassette Sampler “ on the front of the case. The cassette was prepared for in-store use, and was distributed throughout the UK for use in listening stations, and for play in stores. A separate item, titled “Video Sampler” was produced with the same cover, and contained videos for use in store. Both the “Cassette Sampler” and the “Video Sampler” came with a black cover, and the U2 logo in use throughout “The Joshua Tree” promotional campaign. Above the U2 logo is a gold bar, and at the bottom of the cover is the name of the sampler. Also on both is a small ribbon of yellow with lists “For Store Use Only Not for Sale”.

Both items were produced to promote the release of “The Joshua Tree”. The sampler cassette contained various tracks from earlier albums as well as some tracks from “The Joshua Tree” itself. A number of copies were packaged together with the cassette version of “The U2 Talkie”, a tour program and a promotional sports bag and used for prize packages as well.

The songs used here on the sampler are all album versions of the songs.

The video sampler contained “A Celebration”, “11 O’Clock Tick Tock”, “I Will Follow”, “A Day Without Me”, “The Electric Co.”, “Gloria”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “New Year’s Day”, “Two Hearts Beat as One”, “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, “Bad”, “The Unforgettable Fire” and “A Sort of Homecoming”. The video was in PAL format.
