Background Information
“City of Blinding Lights” was the fourth song used for promotion of the album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb”. The promotional single was issued worldwide.
In the USA, the single was released in a regular jewel case with back and front inserts. In the UK (and distributed through Europe) the promotional CD was issued in a slimline case. In Spain a card sleeve was used for the promotional CD. Finally in Mexico, the CD was released in a generic Universal card sleeve, and featured little to no graphics on the CD either. In all cases, the promotional CD contained an edit of the song at 4:11 in length. The US promotional single also included the full length album version of the song. Interestingly the US CD lists 2004 as the date of release, rather than 2005 on the CD and the cover.
On May 16, 2005, a 12-Inch single was also issued to radio DJs. The 12-Inch single included two remixes of “City of Blinding Lights”, titled “Phones P.D.A. in N.Y.C. Mix” (remixed by Paul Epworth) and “Remixed by Paradise Soul” (Stretch Sylvester and Mike Monday). It also included a remix of the track “All Because of You” titled the “Killahurtz Fly Mix”. (Mick Park and Lea Kenny). The remix of “All Because of You” also appeared on the commercial single, but the remixes of “City of Blinding Lights” were exclusive to this promotional release. A shortened edit of the remix by Paradise Soul did appear on the compilation by Pete Tong, “Essential Selection”.
