Background Information
U2 announced the release of a 20th anniversary series of recordings of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb on September 26, 2024. Immediately a double A-Side commercial single was released on commercial services for “Country Mile” / “Picture of You (X+Y)” containing the album versions of those two songs. Both are taken from the “shadow album” of demos titled, How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb.
Both “Picture of You” and “Country Mile” were issued as promotional singles, with the first releases coming the day of the announcement, September 26, 2024. In fact, the radio edit of “Country Mile” was the version that Dave Fanning played on 2FM in his exclusive first listen of the song ahead of the full announcement. These promotional singles are delivered to radio stations via digital services and to date we are not aware of any physical releases for “Country Mile”, nor for “Picture of You (X+W)”.
The artwork accompanying the “Country Mile” promotional single is the cover of the How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb album. The album version of the song and a radio edit of the song have been issued.
The day of the announcement the digital promotional single sent out included both the album version of “Country Mile” and the shorter radio edit of the song. The album version runs 04:58, while the radio edit runs 04:35 in length. It is the shorter radio edit which is being used on U2 X-Radio. A second promotional release, containing only the album version of “Country Mile” followed on October 4, 2024, but may have been released in some markets earlier.
“Picture of You (X+W)“ is being heavily pushed for airplay in North America, while “Country Mile” is getting a stronger push for airplay in Europe. Both have entered airplay charts.
