Background Information
This 2021 release for Record Store Day is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of the single, “Fire”. The release is a 12-Inch picture disc cut at 45RPM, featuring “Fire” and original B-Side “J. Swallow” as well as two live versions of “Fire.” The picture disc features an image of fire in a ring on the A-Side, and on the B-Side features an image of U2 taken on their first trip to London in late 1979 by photographer, Martyn Goddard. The band were photographed in a flat that Paul McGuinness had rented them from a friend.
The release of this single is via Record Store Day events, worldwide, and will happen on June 12, 2021. This is the first of two Record Store Day drops in 2021. The catalog number of this release is3534916 and 00602435349169 appears on the back sticker. The release is packaged in an outer PVC outer sleeve which is stickered like previous picture disc releases. The American Record Store Day site lists that the release will be limited to 7500 copies in the USA.
All of the tracks appearing on the EP have been newly remastered for this 2021, but all tracks also appeared in 2008 on the Deluxe Remasters for the albums October and War. The tracks “Fire” and “J. Swallow” were issued on the original “Fire” single and both appear on the October Deluxe edition in 2008. The live version of “Fire” from Hammersmith Palais in December 1982 also appears on the October Deluxe edition from 2008. The live version of “Fire” from Werchter in July 1982 appeared as a B-Side on the “New Year’s Day“ single in 1983 and the War Deluxe edition from 2008.
