Background Information
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” was the second single released to promote “The Joshua Tree”. It was released worldwide as a commercial single, and in most regions the promotional single were quite similar to the commercial single.
In most countries the 7-inch promotional single featured “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” on the A-side and “Spanish Eyes” on the b-side. In Australia, copies of the commercial 7-inch were released with a sticker that listed it as a promotional item. In Germany promotional copies of the commercial single were given out with an added one-sheet “Single Facts”. In Japan the promotional single also included “Deep in the Heart” and was the same as the commercial single with the exception of a sticker over the UPC on the sleeve, and added text on the label. In Spain the release was the same as the commercial except for a white label.
In Mexico and Argentina, the 7-inch promotional single was released in a generic sleeve, and included “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” on both sides. In the US, the promotional single also featured the same song on both sides, but some were released in a commercial sleeve.
12-Inch promotional singles were less common for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. In Australia, Canada and Mexico, the promotional vinyl released was the same as the commercial with some stamp or sticker marking it as a promotional release. In Spain a separate 12-inch was produced with different labels than the commercial release.
One final promotional release of note is a 7-inch black flexible vinyl that was given free with a 1988 issue of Bizz Magazine in Brazil. This was released inside the pages of the magazine. It is one sided. The version of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” is the version that was released on “Rattle and Hum” in 1988 and is not the studio version of the song.
A 12-inch pressing of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” was also issued for promotion in Brazil. The vinyl contains four songs, but only one is by U2. Further information on these Brazil 12-inch pressings can be found in a separate discography entry.
