Background Information
“Lemon” was the second single released from “Zooropa,” and promotional releases began to appear in October of 1993 to support the song at radio. A number of promotional items in a number of formats were released worldwide, unlike the commercial single which was only issued on CD and cassette in Japan and Australia, and on 12-inch vinyl in the USA. A very unique 10-inch vinyl single was released to DJs in the US. This single was a 10-inch yellow vinyl, with a marbling of white vinyl. The single featured “Lemon (Bad Yard Club Mix)” on one side, and “Lemon (Serious Def Dub)” on the other. It was released without a picture sleeve.
Two 12-inch vinyl were issued in the UK to support the release. These were issued separately or in a limited numbered double pack with each other. The first came in a full picture sleeve, and featured “Lemon (Bad Yard Club Mix)”, “Lemon (Momo’s Beats)”, “Lemon (Bad Yard Club Version Dub)”, and “Lemon (Serious Def Dub)”. The second came in a generic black sleeve, and the lemon featured in the label was coloured pink instead of yellow. This second vinyl contained “Lemon (Perfecto Mix)” and “Lemon (Trance Mix)”. Of these songs the “Serious Def Dub” and the “Momo’s Beats” mixes were exclusives to these promotional releases, at least for many years, until the “Serious Def Dub” was included with “The Complete U2” on iTunes. “Momo’s Beats” was also listed as part of that set, although the song that was released was just a duplicate of “Momo’s Reprise”. On some releases the “Bad Yard Club Version Dub” is called just “Version Dub” or “BYC Version Dub” or “Morales BYC Version Dub”, but these are all the same mix.
In the UK a 5-inch CD was pressed featuring a full colour sleeve with a unique cover, and including the lyrics for the song. This was issued in a slimline jewel case. Two pressings of this promotional single are known to exist, the more common being one where the CD face is printed in black with white text over top with the release information. The second, more rare pressing uses black print on the reflective CD surface alone, and it presents the identical information about the release. Both contain the same matrix information, and both were pressed by PDO in the UK. It is unknown why the second CD varies from the one that was distributed in greater quantities. The inserts used for both pressings are identical.
A unique 5-inch CD single was produced for promotion in the North American market. The CD was released in a generic regular jewel case, and contained four mixes of the song, including two not available on other releases. This CD featured “Lemon (Edit)”, “Lemon (Lemonade Mix Edit)”, “Lemon (Album Version)” and “Lemon (Lemonade Mix)”. The two “Lemonade” mixes are exclusive to this release, and were not included as part of “The Complete U2” when it was issued by iTunes in 2004. This promotional CD had a yellow silkscreened “Interference” pattern on the Cd which matched patterns used on other U2 releases including “Zooropa” (purple), two “Numb” promotional singles (orange and red), “Zooropa” promotional single (green) and “Stay” promotional single (blue).
