Background Information
“Zoo TV Live in Dublin, 1993” is an EP by U2 containing tracks from their two shows performed in Dublin on the Zoo TV tour in 1993. The EP was announced on July 25, 2024, although had been rumoured since early May to be coming. The EP will be released on yellow vinyl (12-Inch), CD, and digital, including a Dolby Atmos mix of the tracks. The 12-Inch and CD will be released on Universal Music Recordings and will be available worldwide.
The vinyl includes “Zoo Station”, “Mysterious Ways” and “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” on the neon yellow record. The B-Side is filled out with “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” and “Love is Blindness”. In Japan there will also be a domestic release on SHM-CD which will contain a special bonus track, “The Fly” taken from the same shows.
To promote the EP, the first song, “Mysterious Ways” was released as a standalone single on some digital services, while on other it has been released as pre-order bonus when you buy the entire EP. (Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify are treating it as a stand alone single, while Amazon and Apple Music / iTunes are including as part of the EP itself.) A commercial to promote the EP sees a light blue Trabant being filmed as it drives around Ireland while “Mysterious Ways” plays.
The sleeve and the CD both list that the tracks were recorded on August 28, 1993. The August 28, 1993 show was recorded, and broadcast on radio by Westwood One in 1993. Three songs from that show were included in various releases through the years. “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” was released on the Achtung Baby 30 Live fan club release. “Even Better than the Real Thing” was released on the Radio 1: FM Sessions compilation. And “Bullet the Blue Sky” was originally released on the “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)“ single, but was not included on the recent 2024 digital remaster. However not all of the tracks on this EP are from that show, most are not. The August 27 show was recorded as well, and this will be the first time any material has been made available from that night, the first release from the EP, “Mysterious Ways” is taken from that first show in Dublin, as are “Zoo Station”, “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” and “Love is Blindness”. Indeed it looks like the only song taken from the second Dublin concert is the previously released “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World”. (The bonus track on the Japan version, “The Fly”, is also taken from the second concert, August 28, 1993)
The press release for this release shares, “this Exclusive Limited Edition features five tracks from one of U2’s two legendary open-air performances at the RDS Arena, Dublin in August 1993, the hometown stop on their worldwide industry-defining ZOO TV Tour. While much sought-after bootlegged copies of the RDS show audio have been in circulation for years, this marks the first official release, making it a highly covetable collectible for fans and collectors alike.” In this case limited refers to a single pressing, and the item will not be kept in print after it sells out. However, the total number being produced is not known.
The cover of the EP is a design that was used for tour posters and advertising during the 1993 dates of the Zoo TV tour, and was also used on T-shirts, both in 1993, and more recently the design was used on T-Shirts at Sphere. The photo, by Anton Corbijn, was also used as the cover for the band’s 1994 calendar.
Additionally, when purchased through Amazon in Japan a special “mega jacket” print will be available which measures 24cm square, while supplies last when purchasing the SHM-CD format. (A mega jacket is a printed image of the front cover, printed larger than the CD booklet.) No other Japanese release exclusives are known at this time. Additional merchandise was made available to purchase via U2.com, including three T-shirts, a hooded sweatshirt, and a foil poster of the cover image.
