"Melon" - U2

Promotional Release

Background Information

In the January of 1995, subscribers to U2’s fan club magazine, Propaganda began receiving the latest issue of the magazine, poly bagged with a copy of the CD Melon. This CD featured a compilation of remixes and tracks from the 1990s. It was the first release for the U2 fan club, and only released in CD format. At the same time a 12-Inch promotional vinyl version of Melon was released in the UK to DJs to promote the fan club release, and to further promote U2’s interest in dance music. The band had opened their nightclub The Kitchen in the basement of the Clarence hotel less than a year before and were getting more involved in dance music and DJ culture through the club.

This promotional 12-Inch pressing featured four songs, two on each side, all four taken from the free CD sent to fan club members. The original CD had 9 tracks, and not all of them are on this promotional release. The vinyl was in black vinyl at 120 gsm weight. The vinyl featured a similar cover to the CD-sleeve, with the titles being smaller. The label on the 12-Inch was the same as the print on the CD – the center of a melon with the seeds being visible.

The limited nature of the fan club CD has spawned a number of bootlegs of that item, including a whole line of bootleg remixes CD. This 12-Inch record however is official, and indeed is the only other official release at this time to contain the name “Melon”. The full content of the fan club CD was later released as part of The Complete U2 digital package released by iTunes in 2004.
