Background Information
“Mofo” was released in December 1997 simultaneously with the single “If God Will Send His Angels” as the final singles from the album “Pop”. “If God Will Send His Angels” was released with more traditional b-sides, and “Mofo” was released for the clubs with a number of remixes. Thus a number of the promotional releases for “Mofo” were aimed at the DJ.
In the UK there were three different 12-inch vinyl promotional releases. The first, 12MOFO1 was packaged in a picture sleeve, cut out so that the label could be seen. There was a grey polka dot pattern over the cover, and the title was written in orange to match the label. This 12-inch promotional relase contained “Mofo (Phunk Force Mix)”, “Mofo (Black Hole Dub)” and “Mofo (Romin Remix)”. The second 12-inch promotional single was very similar to the first with the grey polka dot pattern on the cover and being cut out so that the label was visible. On this copy the label on the vinyl and the title on the sleeve are in pink. This was a very limited release, stated to be limited to 250 copies. This version of the single contained “Mofo (Mothers Mix)” and “Mofo (House Flavour Mix)”. A third vinyl was released to the UK market in a plain black die cut sleeve. The label was entirely white with a rubber stamp that stated “U2 MOFO Matthew Roberts Limited Edition Explicit Remix”. According to promotional material that accompanied this release, this version was limited to 300 copies. The vinyl itself was one-side, although there are some two-sided mispressings. The track contained on this release, 12MOFO3, is “Mofo (Matthew Roberts Explicit Remix)” which has not appeared on any other release.
In the USA, there was also a 12-inch promotional release on vinyl. The vinyl was released in a plain white die cut sleeve. The sleeve was stickered with a sticker that said “Mofo remixes by Roni Size b/w If God Will Send His Angels Big Yam Mix” and the catalog number. The label itself was also rather plain. Tracks included on this vinyl were “Mofo (Mothers Mix)”, “Mofo (House Flavour Mix)” and “If God Will Send His Angels (Big Yam Mix)”. The “Big Yam Mix” is actually the same remix that features on the commercial CD release of “Mofo” only there it appeared under the name “Grand Jury Mix”. Big Yam is an alternate name for the remixer of the track, Gerald Baillergeau.
There were two different pressings of the CD in the UK. The first, catalog number MOFOCD1, was pressed with a very different cover image on a card sleeve. The CD itself was pressed in the UK for export to Mexico, and the back cover lists the tour dates for Mexico. This release featured the album version of “Mofo”. The second CD pressed in the UK, was used in the UK for promotion. The catalog on this was MOFOCD2. It was pressed and released in a slimline jewel case with full colour insert. The pattern on the CD and the front cover was pink, with grey polka dots. This version of the promotional release contained a unique edit of the title track, “Mofo (Phunk Phorce Edit)”. A final promotional CD was pressed in Mexico itself, and it again used a unique front image, four coloured photos of the band members, arranged like the cover of “Pop”. The promo was again in a card sleeve, and featured only the album version of the title track.
