Background Information
Record Store Day 2025 is April 12, 2025, and U2’s contribution was announced today, February 6.
This year they are releasing a 30th anniversary edition of the Passengers Original Sountracks 1 album. The album, originally released in November 1995, featured U2 with added ‘passengers’ Brian Eno, Howie B, Pavarotti and Holi for a full length album release. This new release is the first reissue of the album on vinyl since the original 1995 release. The 2025 edition will be a double album, and is being released as a “Record Store Day First” release.
The record will be on recycled black vinyl, and will include the bonus track “Bottoms (Watashitachi No Ookina Yume)”, which is a remix of “Zoo Station”. The album has been remastered for the first time for this release.
In 1995 there were two pressings on vinyl, one in the US and one in the UK. As vinyl was declining in sales, both were pressed in very limited numbers, and have become very difficult to find. They were even included in a recent list from Record Collector magazine detailing U2’s Top Collectibles.
U2 have been participating in Record Store Day since the Black Friday event in November 2010. This year’s release is the 20th items released via Record Store Day over the years by U2. We maintain a full list of all of the items U2 have released from “Wide Awake in Europe” to the most recent How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb release. Record Store Day is an event that started in 2008, with an aim to get people into independent record stores, by offering exclusive limited pressings. It later expanded to two days a year, with the addition of the Black Friday event in 2010. Initially the day was a USA only event, with limited quantities being carried outside of the US, but nowadays, many countries around the world celebrate the day.
