Background Information
U2’s release for Record Store Day 2025 was a remastered edition of the Passengers project, Original Soundtracks 1. The release was announced on February 6, and was released as part of the Record Store Day event on April 12, 2025. The record celebrates the 30th anniversary of the original release of Original Soundtracks 1. The album, originally released in November 1995, featured U2 with added ‘passengers’, Brian Eno, Howie B, Pavarotti and Holi for a full length album release.
This new release is the first reissue of the album on vinyl since the original 1995 release. The 2025 edition is a double album, being released as a “Record Store Day First” release. (U2 usually releases under this category, it does not necessarily mean that they will reissue it in other formats later.) The album is pressed on recycled black vinyl, at 33RPM, and will include the bonus track “Bottoms (Watashitachi No Ookina Yume)”, which is a remix of “Zoo Station”. (“Bottoms” was the bonus track on the Japan CD release in 1995, this is the first time it has been issued on vinyl.) Remastering of the album under the direction of The Edge for this release, and remastering is by Scott Sedillo at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Sedillo has been working on all of U2’s remastering projects for a number of years now.
Proceeds from the original “Miss Sarajevo” single in the UK were given to War Child UK. Likewise, with this new release of the album, a donation will be made to War Child in the UK for each copy sold. £1 from each sale of the 30th anniversary album will be donated. The Passengers record is one of 14 releases supporting War Child this year.
The album has long been out of print on vinyl, and it was released at a time when large quantities were not being produced. Although there were two pressings, one in the US and one in the UK, both were pressed in limited quantities, and have become quite difficult to find, bringing in large prices at auction. Due to this fact they were included in a recent list from Record Collector magazine detailing U2’s top collectibles. Total quantities of this record being produced are not known, but it has been revealed that 3500 copies will be available in the US of this release, and likewise, 3500 copies are available in UK / Ireland.
The overall record will have the catalog number 7564601, while the records will have the catalog numbers 7564602 (Record 1) and 7564603 (Record 2).
U2 have been participating in Record Store Day since the Black Friday event in November 2010. This year’s release is the 20th items released via Record Store Day over the years by U2. We maintain a full list of all of the items U2 have released from “Wide Awake in Europe” to the most recent How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb release. Record Store Day is an event that started in 2008, with an aim to get people into independent record stores, by offering exclusive limited pressings. It later expanded to two days a year, with the addition of the Black Friday event in 2010. Initially the day was a USA only event, with limited quantities being carried outside of the US, but nowadays, many countries around the world celebrate the day.
