Background Information
This promotional CD was issued in the USA for stores to use to promote the new release “The Best of 1980 – 1990”, released in November 1998. Stores were asked to play the CD in store and it was also used in some listening stations so shoppers could listen to a sampling of tracks on the new album, and the B-sides disc that was available for the early weeks of sales. The CD itself contained ten tracks, including 6 from the A-sides disc and 4 from the B-sides disc.
The CD was released in a regular jewel case. Included in the jewel case was a back insert in black and white which contained the Island Records logo, as well as a listing of the contents of the CD as well as identifying the songs as being an “A Side” or “B Side” and the year that the songs were released. On this back insert, and on the disc itself the recording is called “Selections from U2 The Best of 1980 – 1990”. There was no front insert, but instead the case was stickered with a large sticker which covered the case. This sticker refers to the disc as “The Best of 1980 – 1990 In-Store Play Sampler” which is the name under which we listed this item here for a number of years.
There are no unique edits on this disc, all are the same as the versions found on the album release.
