Background Information
At the end of 2002, U2 had released “The Best of 1990 – 2000” and as part of the promotion for that album released a 12-inch disc with two remixes of “Staring at the Sun”. This was done in hopes of getting play in dance clubs, which would further garner attention for the new compilation that had been released. The track was given to the duo Brothers in Rhythm to be remixed. This duo were house music DJs who took the track apart and produced two new mixes of the song. These were their first remixes for U2, but are well known for remixes for artists including the Pet Shop Boys, Garbage, New Order and Kylie Minogue.
“Staring at the Sun” was one of four tracks that had been re-recorded for the compilation “The Best of 1990 – 2000” but this series of mixes did not use this new recording, instead it went back to an acoustic performance of the song for the song. In fact, these mixes of the song only appeared on vinyl, and were not featured on any CD releases surrounding the album. The 12-inch was released in a plain black sleeve, and the labels were white with plain text. Some doubted the authenticity of this release over the years, but these concerns were put to rest when “Artificial Horizon” was released for the fan club and one of the mixes finally appeared on a U2 release.
