The song was released to radio on September 24, 2004, and would not be released commercially until November 8, 2004. The version of “Vertigo” contained on these promos isn’t the exact same as the version on the album. The version on the single and on the promotional single is actually slightly edited, and is missing a few seconds of sound at the end of the track. Otherwise the track is the same as the album version.
The 7-inch vinyl was released in the UK and contained “Vertigo (Single Version edit)” and “Vertigo (Jacknife Lee 7”)” It was released in October 2004 as a promotional item. A 7-inch commercial vinyl from the USA was also issued early in September 2004 for use as a promotional item before the commercial release in October.

In January 2005, a second 12-inch was released with a similar cover to the first, only with the addition of remix to the sleeve and label. This second version contained “Vertigo (Redanka Power Mix)” and “Vertigo (Trent Reznor Remix)”
A number of 5-inch CD singles were pressed as well for promotion. In the UK a 5-inch single in a slimline jewel case was issued with just contained “Vertigo (Single Version Edit)”. In France this single was released in a fold out cardboard sleeve which unfolded would present the CD. This was released the week of September 24, 2004 to radio stations throughout Europe. The same week a promotional single was also issued in the USA to radio stations, containing the same track, but packaged in a regular jewel case.
