"Walk On" - U2

Promotional Release

Track Listing:

Background Information

“Walk On” was released twice commercially. It was first released in Canada at the end of 2000, and then later in the Fall of 2001 was released in territories outside of North America. While the commercial single was released in Canada, there was a promotional single released for the USA. When the single was released elsewhere, there were promotional singles produced as well.

The first promotional single arrived in December 2000 in the USA. It was a two track release in a regular jewel case. The versions of “Walk On” included were the “Radio Edit” and the “Album Version”. The release came with front and back inserts, which were similar in look to the “Stuck in a Moment” promotional releases in other parts of the world that were happening at the same time.

In January of 2001 a second promotional single appeared in the USA. This time it contained just a back insert in a regular jewel case. It contained one track only, which was labeled as “Walk On (Remix)”. The “Radio Edit” and the “Remix” are both very similar in sound, however there is a difference in individual intstrument levels between the two tracks.

In October 2001, two 5-inch promotional CDs were issued in the uK. The first was labeled “WALKCD1” and contained a brownish colour cover. This was released in a regular jewel case, and contained the “Single Version” of the song. That promo was withdrawn for an unknown reason, and a second promo in a grey sleeve was issued with the catalog number “WALKCD2”. This time the promotional single contained both the “Video Mix” and the “Single Version” of “Walk On”.

A number of CDR promotional releases were also made throughout the UK and Europe. In the UK there were at least two promotional releases, both in a plastic slipcase, with just a plain piece of paper with black text announcing the contents. One labeled October 4, 2001, contained two tracks, the “Steve Lillywhite Video Version” (aka the “Video Mix”) and the “Nigel Godrich Version” (aka the “Single Version”). The second CDR promo lists the only track as the “Bright EQ’d Single Version” and was dated October 24, 2001. The version contained there was the “Single Version”. In Germany there was also a CDR promo produced in a slimline jewel case with a plain insert. This single had one track, labeled here as “Single Version – Edit” and it was thought to be an edit but is actually just the regular “Single Version”.

A promo CDR released in Europe at the same time included the live version of the song taken from the “Live in Boston” DVD. This one track promo contained just the one track, and was faded in and faded out. It was sent to promote the video release which was happening at the same time as the single was being released to radio.

In February 2002, a CDR promo was also issued in the USA. It was released in a regular jewel case with only a back insert. The mix here is called “The Hallelujah Mix” and this mix has not circulated on other releases. This promotional release was done in February 2002 to celebrate U2’s win at the Grammy Awards. Sadly a number of bootlegs of the CDR have circulated, and can be identified by a number of mistakes on the CDR including Polygram being spelt Poligram. It is spelled correctly on the official release.
