Background Information
Across the Universe is a film directed by Julie Taymor, using the songs of the Beatles to tell a story scripted by Taymor, Dick Clement, and Ian La Frenais. Bono appears in the film as the character Doctor Robert, and says a few lines, and is seen singing “I Am the Walrus”. Bono and The Edge also perform the final track heard over the film credits, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. Both tracks used in the film are different edits from the versions which would be released on the soundtrack album.
The film debuted on September 10, 2007 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It made its regular debut in theatre on September 14, 2007 in the USA. It was released on various video formats including UMD, DVD and Blu-Ray on February 5, 2008.
Bono and The Edge would begin working with Taymor on “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark”, a Broadway musical following their work together on this film.
