Background Information
In 1992 a compilation album was put together by the Earth Love Fund (ELF) for the Earth Summit. To promote the album, a limited number of CDs were pressed containing three songs that were on the main album. This sampler CD was released in a card sleeve with the same cover image, but is labeled as “Limited Edition” on the front cover. The CD contained three songs, including U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. The version on this single is the first song on the CD. It is mixed with 20 seconds of nature noises, that open the track. The nature noises had been recorded and used on an earlier compilation on which U2 had not been a part of. Surprisingly these nature noises are only heard on the mix which was released on this promotional sampler. The version of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” used on the full album does not contain the nature noise. The album was put together for the Earth Summit in 1992, and funds raised through the album were used in support of conservation work in the rainforests.
In 2005 a second album was released, this time titled “Earthrise II: Artists for the Environment”. U2 would also lend a track to this compilation, this time the “Temple Bar” edit of “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”, but that too was an extended version with added nature noises, but this time at the end of the track. In 1999, U2 would again contribute a track to the ELF, this time “Mofo (Phunk Phorce Mix)” was used on the double CD, “Planet Electrica: Protection”. The proceeds from this later album went to the people of Honduras, in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch.
