Background Information
“Honeymoon in Vegas” was a romantic comedy starring Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker, that was released on August 28, 1992. The comedy is set in Las Vegas, and the movie plays up many aspects of Vegas including Elvis impersonators. The soundtrack to the film was a selection of Elvis Presley songs recorded by many contemporary artists. Bono appears solo on the album, performing the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. The song was written by Peretti, Creatore and Weiss for Elvis Presley to sing, and his version was released in 1961. The song has been covered by dozens of artists. Although featured on the soundtrack, Bono’s version of the song was not featured in the film.
The version here features Bono singing, with sound bites from Elvis featured throughout the song. The song is credited to Bono alone, although U2 would later release a remix, “Triple Peaks Remix,” of the song as a b-side on the “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” single. They also released a “Mystery Train Dub” remix of the song on the Salome 12” Promotional Vinyl. Both of these remixes would also be released on the 20th anniversary release of “Achtung Baby” on the six-disc versions of that release, although the version of the “Mystery Train Dub” was a longer recording than previously released. The version that is featured here on the soundtrack was not included on any of these releases. When “The Complete U2” digital collection was released on iTunes in 2004, the only version included was the “Triple Peaks Remix” leaving both the soundtrack version and the “Mystery Train Dub” uncollected.
U2 has often performed “Can’t Help Falling in Love” during live shows. The first time was a concert on the Joshua Tree in Murfreesboro, TN. The song was performed nightly during the Zoo TV shows in 1992, and 1993, and typically would be the last song played each night. The song was performed at 86 of the 156 shows performed on the Zoo TV tour. The song was also performed twice during the PopMart Tour in 1997, and has been added as a snippet to other songs on both the Elevation tour and the Vertigo tour. A live performance of the song from the Sydney Australia performance in 1993 can be found on the DVD for that tour, as well as the “Zoo TV Live” fan club release.
