Background Information
This is a 12-inch promotional record released as part of the Columbia Records Interchords promotional series. It was released to promote the release of the album, Folkways: A Vision Shared in 1988. The promotional disc features a black and white version of the album cover. The back cover features black and white images of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, and a list of all the artists who appear on the album.
This promotional release does mix interview footage with the music from the album, indeed it’s the same mix as used in the video release, A Vision Shared: A Tribute to Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. Some of the music used on this promotional release does not feature on the album that it is promoting.
U2’s “Jesus Christ” is included on this promotional release, as part of the third track. Partway through the recording fades to the background and we hear Bono interviewed over top of the U2 track. The seventh and final track on this promotional release is “This Land is Your Land”. On the album, the song has been recorded by Pete Seegar with Sweet Honey in the Rock, Doc Watson and the Little Red School House Chorus. On the promotional release, it is a very different version of the song, featuring Bono and The Edge among other artists performing the song. This is the version also heard in the video, but in the video there is an extended instrumental ending that plays over the credits of the film. Here on the promotional release it fades out much earlier.
