Background Information

This audio release of the Live 8 concerts was done on May 28, 2019, with 115 tracks being released a a single album for digital purchase or for streaming. The tracks are numbered from 1 to 115 and are not split into albums. This was the first full release in an audio format. The 2005 concert had previously been released on DVD video, and some select tracks were offered as audio tracks over the years. A similar release was done with the Live Aid concert from 1985 on September 7, 2018. The Live 8 audio has been released on a number of platforms, and is streaming only on some of these services like Qobuz and Spotify. A download is possible on the Tidal service. On iTunes all 115 tracks are available for $9.99, or are available individually at a higher price.

The album features four tracks by U2:

  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Live at Live 8, Hyde Park, London, 2nd July 2005) – Paul McCartney
  • Beautiful Day (Live at Live 8, Hyde Park, London, 2nd July 2005) – U2
  • Vertigo (Live at Live 8, Hyde Park, London, 2nd July 2005) – U2
  • One (Live at Live 8, Hyde Park, London, 2nd July 2005) – U2

Each of the above audio tracks is similar in length to the audio on the DVD release, and we are investigating if there are any differences. For now the links above for lyrics lead to those from the DVD.

Also included among the 115 tracks is Bono’s speech from an event held a week later:

  • Speech (Live at Live 8, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, 6th July 2004) – Bono (Date is an error, see below)

These songs have been released on a variety of platforms previously. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” performed by U2 with Paul McCartney was released a digital single the day of the event. And as of the week of release “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was confirmed as the fastest selling digital song of all time. It was also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Quickest Single Put on Sale”, available online only 45 minutes after the performance of the song. The track was also available on the Live 8 home video release, as are the rest of the performances found here. A promotional release for the concerts also included some of the live tracks, including U2’s performance of “Vertigo”.

The Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005 held in London’s Hyde Park was one of a string of concerts around the world staged throughout the G8 and South Africa. The concerts were timed to proceed the G8 summit, and were held in conjunction with the Make Poverty History campaign. U2 opened the London concert, and played a set that included “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” performed with Paul McCartney of the Beatles. The song, “Sgt. Pepper’s” opens with the lyric “It was twenty years ago” and it was chosen to mark that Live 8 was taking place 20 years after another similar concert had taken place, Live Aid. The Live 8 concerts took place at a number of locations around the world on July 2, 2005, in nations that were part of the G8 and in South Africa, and the concerts were timed to lead into the G8 summit being held that summer. The concerts were in support of the Make Poverty History campaign, and attempted to bring the message to politicians.

Although dated July 6, 2004 on the release, the speech by Bono was actually recorded on July 6, 2005. This was part of a Live 8 organized event called Edinburgh 50,000 – The Final Push, and featured a number of additional performances by musicians, and was the closest even to the actual location of that year’s G8 summit.
