Background Information
This home video release of the “Make Poverty History” concert was distributed in the Herald Sun newspaper on December 9, 2006, as a free insert to the paper. The back of the DVD read, “On Friday November 17, 2006, a group of Australia’s top performers and two chart-topping international acts joined forces to help Make Poverty History. In a ground-breaking concert, more than 14,000 music fans converged on the Sidney Myer Music Bowl to be part of this historic event, while tens of thousands more watched the concert at live sites and online around the nation. Now, the Herald Sun and Make Poverty History concert organisers are proud to present the official souvenir DVD commemorating the milestone moments.”
The concert itself featured a number of Australian acts including Sarah Blasko, the John Butler Trio, Evermore, and more throughout the day. The only performance U2 were involved in was a performance by Pearl Jam, joined by Bono and The Edge, and billed the day of the show as U-Jam. They performed one song, a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World”. The footage of U2 and Pearl Jam runs 10:00 in length, with footage of them backstage, both ahead of and after the performance. The song itself is about 7:42 in length. Bono is included again at the end of the DVD as part of the speeches at the end of the show. The brief interview comments with Bono were recorded outside of the concert itself. The U2 / Pearl Jam collaboration can be heard over the final DVD credits as well.
This performance was also released in audio format by Pearl Jam on their 2006 fan club exclusive (released in February 2007.) The single, was a split single, with “Love, Reign O’er Me“ on the A-Side, and the live version of “Rockin’ in the Free World” on the B-Side. The version released via Pearl Jam’s fan club was edited for length and runs 05:27 on the 7-Inch single.
Pearl Jam would join U2 on stage in Honolulu in December 2006 to perform “Rockin’ in the Free World” again with U2, at a concert they opened for U2. It was the final tour stop of the Vertigo tour.
