Background Information
The “Now That’s What I Call Music” series was a successful set of compilations starting in 1983 with over eighty compilations published to date in the regular series, plus many other off-shoots, such as this CD which is part of the “Millenium Series”. The idea was to take hit songs from each year and release a two-CD set of music from that year covering 1980 – 1999. This particular set of CDs covers the year 1982. The song featured here by U2 is “A Celebration” which is a surprising choice, as it had only reached #47 on the UK charts when it was released, and it was not a big song. It was released on a 7-Inch single only, and had never been widely issued on CD. For many years, this compilation was the easiest way for a fan of U2’s to track down the song, as it had never been released on CD and the 7-Inch single was long out of print.
In 2008, when the “October” album was remastered, “A Celebration” was issued as a track on the second disc of b-sides and rarities released with the deluxe edition. This is currently the easier way to find the song, as “Now 1982” is also out of print and not readily available.
The Now 1982 compilation was issued in the UK, and was not released in North America.
