Background Information
A new collection of the work of producer Tony Visconti is being released in October in three different formats, a 4-CD set (77-tracks), a 6-LP set (73-tracks), and a 2-LP version (30-tracks). All three versions of the album will contain Visconti’s work with U2 on the song “A Sort of Homecoming” (Live), recorded live for the EP “Wide Awake in America”. The CD set includes additional David Bowie tracks over what is contained on the vinyl box set.
The album is being newly mastered at AIR Mastering by Phil Kinrade under Visconti’s approval. Visconti, born in Brooklyn, moved to London in the late 1960s and became influential in the music scene there working with Marc Bolan and David Bowie, producing hit track after hit track for the artists.
The U2 track is taken from the 1985, North American release, “Wide Awake in America”. The track, although listed as live, isn’t live at all. “A Sort of Homecoming” was recorded at a soundcheck at Wembley Arena on November 15, 1984, and Visconti added in the crowd noise in the studio during post-production at Good Earth Studios. Sales of the EP were strong, so much demand, that it charted in the UK chart on the strength of import sales. “Wide Awake in America” was remastered under the direction of The Edge in 2009 for the 25th Anniversary release of The Unforgettable Fire and has since been re-issued on vinyl by itself.
All versions include a booklet, with track-by-track notes by Mojo writer, Mark Paytress. The CD booklet will be 80-pages, while the 4-LP set will be a 60-page booklet, and the 2-LP set will have a 12-page booklet. The 4-LP set is limited to 1000 copies, and includes a signed print by Visconti. A CD version is available with signed print, via Visconti’s webstore, which is limited to 500 copies. The collection is being put out by Demon Records.
