Background Information
In 2006, U2 agreed to appear on a 16-track album titled Rhythms Del Mundo Cuba. That album saw U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” being remixed with Latin influences, and vocals by Cuban singer, Coco Freeman. The album had a physical release but was not widely available on streaming services.
On August 16, 2024 there was a quiet re-release of U2’s track as well as four others from the album, as a digital EP on streaming services. This 5-track EP carried the same name as the original.
The original album was put together by Buena Vista Social Club’s Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo.
The proceeds from the original album, and this new EP went towards the organization Artists Project Earth (APE), an organization bringing education and information about climate change to the world. Coldplay, Sting and U2 have all agreed to take part in this re-release to raise awareness of climate change and to provide funds for natural disaster relief. The funds from the original album have funded 350 initiatives to date focused on climate change and disaster relief.
Kenny Young of APE, explains how the project came together: “The project was sparked off by the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The idea came in to do a project with The Buena Vista Social Club to fuse their Latin sounds with Western artists and their familiar popular songs. The project evolved when more environmental disasters struck—the Asian Earthquakes and Hurricane Katrina. But the big picture was climate change. You can call these natural disasters but after all the research and scientific data, we know that we’re at least partly to blame for some of these disasters. Global warming is now in the news daily. If we don’t act in the time frame our experts give us, our grandchildren will curse us eternally.” The EP is dedicated to the memory of Kenny Young.
