Background Information

The “Sounds Savers” promotional series was a series put together by the PolyGram group of labels to promote changes to the company roster of acts. PGD, stands for “PolyGram Group Distribution” and the full title of the series is PGD presents Sound Savers. The series was released in the early 1990s, and was released in both cassette and CD formats. These were promotional issues and were not available for general sale. Five volumes were produced across the life of the series. The first was issued in 1991, and the fifth was released in 1994. A sixth edition was split across three CDs and was split between country, old school, and classic rock. The Classic Rock volume included “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and came out in 1995.

In most cases, the U2 tracks are the common versions of the songs found on albums. “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, “New Year’s Day”, “Two Hearts Beat As One”, and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” all appear in this series and in each case are taken from the studio album. One song of note that is a little different than the album version, is the version of “Gloria” included in this series. This is taken from the live, Under A Blood Red Sky album. On that album it is mixed continuously with the song before and after, but here the track is mixed so that the crowd noise fades in at the start of the track, and fades out again at the end of the track.

These CDs were released in a simple slimline jewel case, with a front insert that had album art on the front, and the track listing on the back. The CDs are marked with the “0501” marking that fans have noted on US pressings of U2’s work throughout the 1990s.
