The film The End of Violence was directed by Wim Wenders and written by Nicholas Klein, and was produced while another movie they worked on together The Million Dollar Hotel was on hiatus.

The song, a duet between Bono and Sinéad O’Connor, was recorded in April 1997. The final editing and mixing of the song was undertaken at San Diego’s Signature Sound Studio on April 28, 1997, both before and after the PopMart concert held at Jack Murphy Stadium. The band also re-recorded and remixed “Last Night on Earth” during the same recording session. When asked about his favourite songs that the band has worked on over the years, Larry Mullen has singled out “I’m Not Your Baby” as one of his favourites.

The soundtrack version is also featured on Sinéad O’Connor’s Collaborations album, and the U2 fan club release, Duals. An instrumental version of the song, titled the “Skysplitter Dub” was released on U2’s single “Please“ in September 1997. An alternate version of the song, featuring vocals by both Sinéad and Bono, was released on the Universal Music promotional collection, Vorverkaufs, also in September 1997.

U2 have a long history of working with Wim Wenders on projects. They first met with him to film a video for “Night and Day” in 1990. U2 has contributed music to his films Until the End of the World (1991), Faraway So Close (1993), Beyond the Clouds (1995) and Bono contributed a song to Don’t Come Knocking in 2005. It was Wenders that directed a film based on a screenplay by Bono and Nicholas Klein, Million Dollar Hotel, which also featured U2 and members of U2 solo on the soundtrack.
