Background Information

This Christmas compilation includes two U2 related tracks. “I Believe in Father Christmas” appears on disc one of the vinyl and CD. The song, which U2 recorded and released in 2008 is a cover of the Greg Lake classic. This is the first time this song will appear on vinyl although it has been released in other formats including CD in the past. The song had previously been released in a compressed digital format as part of the (RED)Wire magazine. It has also appeared on a limited edition Starbucks CD, titled All You Need is Love. The vinyl also contains “Do They Know it’s Christmas?” recorded by Band Aid in 1984. Bono and Adam Clayton were part of the recording session and feature on the song. This is featured on the second disc on vinyl and CD.

The press release for this item stated, “The Greatest Xmas Songs is an excellent collection of the most beautiful Christmas songs of all time. From the ’60s you’ll find classics from The Pointer Sisters, The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley on the record. During the ’70s and ’80s, some iconic Christmas hits were released by Chris Rea, Mud, Band Aid, Paul McCartney, and Queen, among others. This wonderful 2LP record isn’t complete with some of the best-known tracks from the ’90s and onwards, like Mariah Carey & Justin Bieber, Coldplay, and U2. These 27 songs will light up your Christmas and make you enjoy it the best you can.”

This collection is released on Music on Vinyl, which is a Universal label. The record is being produced in Europe and is distributed worldwide. The initial pressings in 2019 included a 2-CD version, and a limited 2500 copy version in red and white vinyl and a 1000 copy silver and clear vinyl. Since that time the record has been released each year. In 2020 the title was changed from “The Greatest Xmas Songs” to “The Greatest Christmas Songs”.
