Background Information
In May 1989 Adam Clayton joined a group of musicians at Winkles Hotel in Kinvara, where they played together and recorded for Sharon Shannon’s solo album. Clayton appeared on acoustic bass on the album, on the track “The Marguerita Suite”, released in 1991 on Shannon’s self-titled album. A second track from those sessions featuring Adam appeared in 2019 on the album The Winkles Tapes 1989.
In December 1992, The Late Late Show on RTÉ in Ireland put together a special celebrating Sharon Shannon. As part of that special they had a number of Irish musicians including Shannon herself to perform on the show. Adam Clayton appears on the program, just shortly after he returned to Ireland from the Zoo TV tour. He joins Sharon Shannon, Donal Lunny, Phillip King and Liam Ó Maonlaí, among others for a live performance of “The Marguerita Suite”. The performance was aired that night on The Late Late Show. They performed the first portion of the song only, and did not perform the latter half of the song found on the album.
In 1993 RTÉ also issued the special on VHS, sold in the Irish market. The video includes the performance by Adam Clayton.
U2 themselves appeared in another RTÉ video, The Late Late Show Tribute to the Dubliners, taped in 1987, and originally released on VHS, and later issued on CD and DVD in 2008. The Sharon Shannon release has not been re-issued in a digital format to our knowledge.
