Background Information

This is a German promotional series of discs from Universal Music GMBH. U2 appears on one release that we know of, the release from September 29, 1997.

The Vorverkaufs series of discs were a series of promotional discs issued by Universal music at a rate of approximately one per month. They were released with relatively plain looking inserts to start but later would include more detailed covers. The cover with the U2 track is just the Universal logo and text identifying the CD, and the back of the insert has details of the tracks on the release. The CD likewise is plain with minimal information.

The U2 track included here is a mix of “I’m Not Your Baby” recorded by U2 with Sinead O’Connor. The song had appeared in September 1997 on the soundtrack for The End of Violence, a Wim Wenders film. This promotional release included two tracks from the soundtrack, “I’m Not Your Baby” as well as Ry Cooder’s “Define Violence”. The U2 / Sinead O’Connor track, however, is not the version found on the soundtrack but is an alternate mix of the song instead. This promotional release is the only known location to find this version of the song.
