Background Information
This 2009 film opened December 4, 2009 in the United States, and was released on Bluray and DVD on March 23, 2010. The film featured “Winter” performed by U2 at the end of the film and over the closing credits. The song had previously appeared in Linear, but was a completely different recording from what was released in Brothers. A longer version of the song from Brothers can be heard on the “Brothers” Promotional release, with a slightly shorter introduction. The film also includes partial pieces of “White as Snow” and “Bad” from U2, but these are not complete songs.
The film was directed by longtime friend of U2, Jim Sheridan. U2 had known Sheridan since their days of appearances at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin, where Sheridan was a founder. U2.com shared, “Director Jim Sheridan has been friends – and occasional collaborator – with U2 since their earliest days in music. The band saw a rough cut of ‘Brothers’ last year and wrote ‘Winter’ for the film during the recording of ‘No Line on the Horizon’. The soundtrack also features another U2 song, ‘Bad’.”
As part of a push during awards season, “Winter“ was sent out to voting members, on a promotional CD. This garnered U2 nominations for the Denver Film Critics Society Awards and also for the 67th Golden Globe Awards. However, the song did not win either award. The song was not nominated for an Academy Award.
