Background Information

The album “Chocabeck” marks the third time that Bono has written English lyrics for a song that Zucchero has previously written in Italian. The first song they worked on together was the song “Miserere” in 1993 which was released as a single and also featured on Zucchero’s album “Miserere”. They worked together in 1998 on the song “Blue” which was released as a single, and featured on English versions of Zucchero’s album “Blue Sugar”. On “Chocabeck” in 2010, Bono writes the English lyrics for the song “Someone Else’s Tears”. The same song features in Italian on the Italian release of the album, using lyrics written and credited only to Zucchero under the name “Il Suono Della Domenica”, which translates roughly to “The Sound of Sunday”. The lyrics written for Bono for the English version do not reference the Italian lyrics, although both are set to the same piece of music.

Zucchero discussed Bono’s contributions to this song: “I’ve been a friend of Bono’s for a long time,” Zucchero says. “He wrote the lyrics for my song `Blue’ and also for `Miserere,’ the song I performed with Pavarotti. Bono doesn’t speak Italian at all, but he heard this song and then came out with these beautiful lyrics that exactly matched my idea of what it was about – life in the country, making wine, enjoying the simple things. It’s true what they say – the music already has the lyric inside it.”

Bono was interviewed for a promotional clip used to promote the album in the USA: “My friend Zucchero has had Italy singing and dancing for years, we all know that. His uh, smile, his boyish smile has made him the most charming man in Italy, that smile just runs all over his face. But the voice, that’s the voice of an aged oak, like an old oak whiskey. You know, what is that extra special thing that he has apart from the voice, the smile, the ancient face voice? I think it’s the hair. Thinking about it it’s the hair. I mean it’s the voice of a lion, but it’s also the hair of a lion.”

The album was released initially in Italy on November 3, 2010. That version of the album did not feature the Bono penned English lyrics, and did not contain “Someone Else’s Tears”. However, as an incentive to buy the album on iTunes, the track “Someone Else’s Tears” was included on the Italian release of the album on iTunes. Other releases around the world in November of 2010 feature the song “Someone Else’s Tears”, however it is suggested to check the track list before purchasing the album to ensure it is present in the track list. In May of 2011, an English version of the album was released in the USA with a number of tracks having been re-recorded with English Lyrics. “Someone Else’s Tears” features on this English release of the album. In November of 2011, the European version of the album was reissued with a second disc featuring these updated English versions of tracks in the UK and throughout Europe.
