Adam Updates on Album, Future Plans

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2025-05-01)

Adam Clayton was interviewed by Oliver Callan on RTE Radio 1 today. The conversation spoke mostly about his gardening hobbies, growing up, his home, and the upcoming festival he’s speaking at for “Fashion Farming” in Kinsale later this month. But Callan did ask Adam about current work with U2.

His first question was about the 50th anniversary of the band, approaching next year, and if the band plan on doing anything to celebrate the date. Adam replied, “You know we know it’s there. We know it’s coming along. We are not particularly going to celebrate it though, but these things are very hard to predict. Whilst we might not be able to align an album or a tour to celebrate that moment, I’m sure we’ll be opening a bottle of champagne on the day.” Adam’s comments reflect comments he made in January on the podcast “Is Breakfast Included” where he shared they would be working on the album into the summer, and would “decide on a release date in early next year.”

Callan then asked about all the quotes online of Edge teasing a new album, and Adam shares some progress, “He’s been teasing me as well. The only thing I can say is it’s a work in progress. We do not have a deadline as such. But I would hope by the end of the year we’d have some information to share, and perhaps we could suggest something for next year.” Reading a quote from the Edge, Callan asked if the band was working on “Sci-Fi Irish folk music with Brian Eno”. Adam replies, “That sounds about right. I think we’re heading off in that direction.” (Edge’s past quotes about this Sci-Fi Irish Folk music album can be found here.)

Finally Callan asked Adam about Larry Mullen and his progress healing. Adam seems happy to share, “He’s absolutely back behind his kit. He’s got his sticks out. He’s great. He’s great. Better than ever.” He tells Callan that Larry did not want to do the shows at Sphere if he couldn’t be there at full strength, and the band told him to “Get right, get fixed, we’ll keep your seat warm for you…”

Callan’s show can be listened to here. Adam Clayton speaks on Saturday May 10 and Sunday May 11 at the Fashion and Farming event in Kinsale. Tickets are available here. Many thanks to Valerie for the heads up on this interview today.
