AngelHeaded Hipster Film Release

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2023-08-12)

A new 95-minute film celebrating the music of Marc Bolan and T.Rex is coming this fall and it will include footage of U2 performing in the film. The film, Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T.Rex just had a trailer released.

The film, will have a special preview event in select UK and Irish cinemas on September 14, and will have a general release in theatres on September 22. It will also be released to home entertainment services on November 6, 2023. More information on the preview events can be found on the film’s website at angelheadedhipster.film. Information on the film’s release outside of the UK is not available, however, it was shown earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film, written and directed by Ethan Silverman, celebrates Marc Bolan, not only through his own work, but also a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of a tribute album by the same name, which was released in 2020. On that tribute album, U2 has contributed a cover of T. Rex’s “Bang A Gong (Get it On)” performing with Elton John on piano. (Elton John played piano on the original with T.Rex when it was featured on Top of the Pops in 1971)

The tribute album, compiled by Hal Wilner, was released in August 2020. Along with the track covered by U2 and Elton John, the album also featured covers by Nick Cave, Kesha, Gavin Friday, Maria McKee, and Victoria Williams with Julian Lennon. The album had been planned originally to celebrate the 70th birthday of Marc Bolan in 2017, but faced a number of delays. At one point the film was expected to be released at the same time as the album. More information on the album is available in our discography entry.

The poster for the UK release of the film is below.
