Bono Writes New Song for Zucchero, “Streets of Surrender”

Orginal Story (2015-12-05)

While being interviewed on CNN, Bono revealed that he has written a new song, called “Streets of Surrender” or “SOS” for his friend Zucchero. This song is the latest in a number of songs Bono has written for Zucchero over the years including 1992’s “Miserere” which was performed by Zucchero and Pavarotti and released on a single, and on Zucchero’s Miserere album. Bono wrote English lyrics for 1998’s “Blue” available as a single and on Zucchero’s Blue Sugar album. Bono also wrote “Someone Else’s Tears” for Zucchero’s 2010 album Chocabeck. Bono has not performed on these previous recordings, he has only contributed lyrics.

The song touches on some themes from the recent U2ieTour, such as the refugee crisis and also the recent attacks in Paris. Bono reveals the lyrics to this new song in response to the question of whether or not the Paris attacks will inspire a new song or an album. Bono revealed these during an interview for CNN’s Fareed Zakaria and the lyrics can be heard in a special web clip from that interview. The full interview airs tomorrow, December 6, at 10am ET on CNN.

Zucchero’s new album is expected in May 2016 and this song is likely to be released on that recording.

Streets of Surrender, written by Bono

Every man has two cities he needs to be
The one he can touch
And the one he can’t see
The one where a stranger’s a friend
Every man has got one city of liberty
For me it’s Paris – I love it
Every time I get lost down these ancient streets I find myself again

You’re free, baby, baby
Free now and forever
It’s Christmastime
You can decide to forget or to remember
You’re free baby baby
I didn’t come down here to fight you
I came down these streets of love and pride to surrender
The streets of surrender

I heard a farfetched story
That nobody seems to know
I think it was about that stranger
It was youth, it was love and it was danger
It was winter with that warm it gets before the snow
It chilled my soul
Everybody’s crying about some kid
That they found lying on a beach
Born in a manger

You’re free baby baby
Free now and forever
It’s Christmastime
You can decide to forget or to remember
You’re free, baby, baby
I didn’t come down here to fight you
I came down these streets of love and pride to surrender
The streets of surrender
