Breaking Waves…New edition for Italy and Japan, Awards, and More

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2025-10-28)

Although the main push for Bono’s film wrapped up back in June, there’s still a few bits and pieces popping up in relation to the project. Just a few notes below on a few newer things…

Stories of Surrender is a shortened version of Bono’s autobiography. The book was released in a shortened form earlier this year to tie in with the release of the film of the same name, and the structure more closely follows the film. At the time of release in May, the book was only made available in English, and had three editions, one for the UK and Ireland, one for Canada, and one for the United States.

A new version will be available on November 4 in Italian. The book is being published by Mondadori in Italy and will be 456 pages. This will be a softcover version of the book. It is the first non-English version of the book. We are not aware yet of any other planned editions.

Copies of the Japan version of Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story have started to arrive in Japan this month. This is the original, uncut version of the book, and is not the shortened version. It is the first time it has been made available in that country. It is available in hardcover as well as digital formats now. The book is available in both bookstores, and in a large number of music stores, if you have a favourite they should have stock now.

The latest issue of British Cinematographer has a feature on the film Stories of Surrender, with an interview with Erik Messerschmidt, ASC. It’s a great read if you want a look into how the film came about and some of the decisions that went into the filming of the shows.

Stories of Surrender is up for awards still. Most recently the film was announced to be a finalist for the Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Those awards are being held in New York on November 9, 2025. Bono’s film is nominated in the “Best Music Documentary” category alongside Becoming Led Zeppelin (Sony Pictures), Billy Joel: And So It Goes (HBO Max), It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (HBO Max, Magnolia Pictures), Ladies & Gentlemen…50 Years of SNL Music (NBC) and Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) (Hulu). The Critics Choice Documentary Awards are associated with the Critics Choice Awards, given out in January. Good luck to Bono and the documentary filmmakers!

We do have a number of pages where we collect information about Bono’s solo project, Surrender and the various spinoffs:
