Bono and The Edge signed a guitar for the Woody Guthrie Center when they accepted their award on Tuesday. The auction for the item was to benefit the center and the winning bid? $50,000US with the win by an anonymous bid. (Starting price on the auction had been $25,000, with increments of $1 accepted.)
Edge was a pretty simple signature on the guitar. Bono got a little more extravagant with a drawing of a claddagh, and writing some lyrics to Guthrie’s “Jesus Christ” on the Gibson Explorer.
Miss out on U2 merchandise from the Woody Guthrie Awards? Both the T-shirt and hat can be purchased now via the online shop.

Bono and The Edge were part of a discussion with T-Bone Burnett at the Woody Guthrie Awards. The discussion lasted about 40 minutes in total. During that time a few bits and pieces about the new album were covered. Bono had an update on the work being done on the new album, as it pertained to Larry’s health:
“Larry and Adam wanted to be here tonight. They only like you, we love you. They are in mighty form. Larry has been just playing at his absolute best. This is the best ever from his drumming. It’s incredible. And Adam is, just great.”

Bono also spoke about the process of songwriting, and how they toyed with bringing a new song to the performance at the awards ceremony:
Bono shared, “Songs come out. We can’t write them to order. We thought about, we had a song that we were going to share, tonight, to play, but without Adam and Larry we couldn’t. But it’s an example of how a song comes about, if you call it a protest song.”
Someone in the crowd shouts, “Lets hear it” and Edge retorts “It’s not finished.” Bono quickly says “I actually might have it.” Edge adds “Bono’s got some words”.
Bono then introduces the lyric:
“There was an awful moment. I don’t know if anyone ever saw this film called No Other Land. It did very well, got an Oscar…They made this film. In July one of the men that worked on this film, a man called Awdah Hathaleen was killed in the most brutal way by an out of control settler in the South Hebron hills. I heard the story, he left behind his daughters. The director of the film said at his passing, they’re trying to erase us, they are trying to wipe us off the earth ‘one life at a time’.“I said to Edge this ‘one life at a time’ thing is so powerful because you can make or break the world one life at a time. So I thought it would be an interesting thing and wrote it that week. We were envious because Neil Young, I think he wrote ‘Ohio’ about Kent State University and put it out…Crosby Stills were a big deal, and they put it out that week. We didn’t. Because we didn’t get it finished. But I have a version of it.”
Hathaleen was killed on July 28, 2025, so the lyrics are new, and the song is new. The band continues to work on their next album, and we’re told that the goal is to have the album out in the second half of 2026 if they can complete things over the next few months.
U2.com has a story about the evening in Tulsa which contains the first verse that Bono had read. Bono did continue:
Look around
What you see depends on where you stand
How you fall depends on where you land
What you know is more than you’ve been told
What you are feeling shapes all that you see
Lose the map, find the territory
What you forget might set your spirit free
You say you’re gonna save the world
Well how are you gonna get that right?
You say you’re gonna save the world tonight
You say you’re gonna save the world
And perfect love drives out all fear
Well how’s that going to happen here?
One life at a time
One life at a time.
The song continues, and Bono ends with “We can make or break the world one life at a time,” reflecting his comments when introducing the song. “Perfect love drives out all fear” is a reference to Bono himself trying to save the world, the line is a lyric from U2’s own “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”, adapted from the Bible verse 1 John 4. The ‘one life at a time’ line comes from Palestinian journalist, Basel Adra, who co-directed the film No Other Land with Israeli journalist, Yuval Abraham.

The final question of the night from Burnett saw him asking about Songs of Surrender, the recent album of old U2 songs that U2 re-recorded in new ways. He asked what they had learned from that project.
The Edge shared: “What was wonderful was I think the songs took on a different quality altogether when we changed the key so Bono could use his voice in a totally different way. He’s one of the most long suffering and patient singers, he’s often given a piece of music and has to find a melodic pathway through it, often at the very top of his range. What was so lovely was to hear him sing these songs within his range. The singer he is now, is the best he’s ever been.”
Come on Edge! You missed the obvious. After years of hearing Bono describe you as being on fire, this was your chance to turn that one back on him!
