Breaking Waves: Larry in Film, Gavin Friday, Atomic Bomb, U218 Singles
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-10-23)
Larry Mullen is one of the producers of the film Left Behind that had its world premiere at the Woodstock Film Festival on Friday.
He’s also contributing to two songs, and we have a bit more detail about the one with GAYLE which opens the film. Larry shares, “It is a rare occasion when a film as compelling as this finds its way to you. Making the music through the eyes of my dyslexic son felt personal and visceral. I was honoured to have the opportunity to collaborate with GAYLE whose lyrics for ‘Between The Lines’ are some of the best I’ve heard in a long time.”
GAYLE, who is also dyslexic shared, “It was an honor to be asked to make a song for such an important issue and with such an iconic musician. This is a topic that affects my life and I’m so inspired to be a part of this project.”
No word yet on when the songs may be released. Larry Mullen also worked with David Baron and Donna Lewis on the closing song for the film. Our coverage on the film premiere is here.
Gavin Friday’s new album Ecce Homo arrives on Friday. One of the songs is “When the World was Young” and the song is dedicated to Bono, Guggi and Lypton Village. The song references growing up on Cedarwood Road.
Today “When the World Was Young” was released as a lyric video on YouTube, a preview ahead of the full album.
Gavin will also be appearing on U2 X-Radio’s “Elevation” with John Kelly on Sunday to discuss the album. (It’s available on SiriusXM to subscribers in the US and Canada.)
Ecce Homo can be pre-ordered here.
The December issue of Record Collector magazine is a U2 cover issue, and will feature new content looking at How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. The issue, #564, although dated December will be out on October 31.
Contents for the issue include: “Bono writes RC a letter! The Edge on U2’s best album of the century! Adam Clayton on the Past, Present & Future of U2!”
The magazine will be available to order here when they start taking orders.
Finally Universal in Japan formally announced the exclusives available in country to those buying copies of the domestic release.
At Amazon, the SHM-CD or SHM-CD Box set will come with a “mega jacket” if you order while supplies last. These are a print of the release cover, and are 240mm x 240mm in size. They are one sided. “Mega Jackets” were also available previously with Songs of Surrender and “Zoo TV Live in Dublin”.
Most other retailers will be providing a sticker while supplies last. The stickers are 110×100mm in size. The sticker at most retailers will include the cover of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb including CD Japan, and Universal Music direct. Tower Records, however, will have a sticker at the same size which features the cover of How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb instead.

These bonus items are available in Japan only, and given when purchasing the domestic produced Japan issues of the new album. Supplies are limited, and once exhausted will not be reoffered.
Finally, Target in the USA has started to ship copies of U218 Singles on orange vinyl. We told you about this release some time ago, but at the time were hoping that other stores would make this item available worldwide. But it appears that this one is a true Target exclusive, and we haven’t seen any sign of it appearing elsewhere.
Currently it is not available to pre-order any longer, but once released on Friday, Target will again be taking orders, and will have it in store. Target does not ship this item outside of the US.
And for those who have asked, Blackwell’s in the UK does have copies of U2: Song by Song available for sale. Shipping is included in the pricing at Blackwell’s for most countries. It is also showing as in stock at Books-A-Million and Amazon in the US. Looks like some of the issues in distribution have finally been cleared up. The book was released earlier this year in most countries, but distribution in the US has been delayed a number of times.
