Cat Power and Iggy Pop Sample U2 for Marianne Faithfull Tribute

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2023-12-08)

A bit of a strange release popped up earlier this week.

It’s a song written by John Lennon, which was later performed and recorded by Marianne Faithfull. It’s now been recorded by Cat Power and Iggy Pop for a Marianne Faithfull tribute album, The Faithful and features a very prominant U2 sample. We’ve embedded the song below:

In the world of tribute albums, The Faithful is unique, in that the artists involved all recorded songs that Faithfull had covered herself through her career. The album includes covers by Shirley Manson (Garbage) and Tanya Donnelly (the Breeders) among many others. The profits from the release are going directly to assist Marianne Faithfull in her recovery from long COVID.

The catalog number for the release is ITQ-007, and there are three physical versions. 100 copies in smoky grey vinyl, 400 copies in classic black vinyl, and 500 copies in pink and white.

Faithfull is an English singer, who gained popularity in the 1960s. Throughout the 1960s she also appeared in a number of films. However, in the 1970s she had a crash, and found herself homeless. In 1979 she made a comeback with her album Broken English leading to several albums in the 1980s.

Bono and The Edge wrote the song “Conversation on a Barstool” specifically for Marianne Faithful, and while she performed the song live in concert throughout the 1990s, she never released a studio version of the song until her 1998 compilation album A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology.

The song performed here by Cat Power and Iggy Pop uses an extensive sample of “With or Without You”, which forms the basis of the background for their voices.

The Faithful is out on digital platforms today. Physical versions of the album are expected to ship in January.

Many thanks to Agustin for the heads up on this release.
